From the ground
Look for slipped, cracked or missing tiles, a dipping or uneven roof line, loose ridge tiles, heavy moss, lifted lead around the chimney and overflowing gutters.
From the loft
Check for daylight coming through, damp or stained timbers, wet insulation and a musty smell — especially after heavy rain.
Inside your home
Brown stains on ceilings, peeling paint near the top of walls, and damp around the chimney breast can all point to a roof problem.
After a storm
Have a look from the ground after high winds. Tiles in the garden or debris in the gutters are a sign it's worth getting the roof checked.
